Do the Crime statistics affect the price of apartments in New York City?

This challenging question brought us to develop this project. Being New Yorkers and knowing all five boroughs we had the hyphotesis that "The Bronx is the borough with the most felonies and lower apartment prices compared to the others. And in general the boroughs with less felonies are more expensive to live in." This idea gave us an introduction to our project and to our surprise the borough with the hightest crime rate is Brooklyn. This is because we can not just take into consideration a borough in general, but the neighboorhoods that make it up. The data that we are using are 7 Major Felonies from Open Source and Apartments for rent in Street Easy.

Through this project, we sought to answer four primary questions:

• What is the historical Crime Data in NYC? By boroughs?
• What borough is safer to live in?
• What is the borough with the majority of felony incidents?
• Do the crime statistics effect the price of apartments?

Using Python as our programming language and it's libraries; Mathplot, csv, numpy, basemap, urllib2,re, etc. and also data filters, list comprehensions, textbook's repo. And for the website (front end): JS, css, html.

Crime Data

For this data set the data was extracted from the csv file from a open source website such as data.cityofnewyork.us. to be able to access the total amount of felonies by borough, all the felonies that happend for a total of ten years were added in a single list for each borough and counters to be able to keep track of felonies . Data structure such as an array was used to collect all the felonies that happend in each borough in an expanse of ten years. We used techniques and tools to show data collected to be able to project all the data collected from the open source website, tools such as matplotlib and csvreader.

We can see that the borough with the highest amount of felonies is Brooklyn.

Next image shows the crimes that happened by year in each borough. We can see that the Staten Island borough is the safest one to live in, although it has less options of aparments.

The borough with hightest felonies is Brooklyn which is the one with the highest population in NYC.

Also, it is good to mention that Staten Island has the lowest felonies in NYC

Apartment Prices

The Data for the Apartment Prices was scraped from Street Easy, a reliable and famous real estate web service in NYC. Converting the website page source into xml to look through in a favorable way in python with a "loop" to look for prices and latitudes and longitudes of the apartments. Then using those prices in python with mathplot to visualize the data. Also to visualize each apartment using basemap.

The borough with most apartments for rent is Manhattan, this is also one of the boroughs with most population. Taking in consideration that most of the apartmenens for rent are Downtown Manhathan and the prices are high.

The image shows all the boroughs in NYC and all the apartments in each borough are represented by black dots. Out of the total of 6,400 apartments the majority of them are in Manhattan.
